THE CROSS IN THE CHRISTMASS TREE

I just got back from seeing my nephew Carl's Christmass program at Zion Lutheran School in Piedmont. I was wary, having not been to one of these things for some time. Here they were, all the Kindergarten, First and Second Graders gathered into the gym. The audience's response was odd. There were the usual knowing looks as children recognized the yelps of younger siblings, or the laughter at the exaggerated renderings of poems. And there was applause as each child said their piece - polite applause rippled from different parts of the room as families and friends acknowledged one of their own.

The title and substance of the Christmass program was "The Cross in the Christmass Tree". As the tree was slowly lighted in the progress of the program, a vague form began to appear. Once all the colored lights were turned off, a carefully placed string of white light spelled out the cross, clearly and deliberately. I wonder if the audience got it?

As I walked through the church, on a busman's holiday, I noticed a nativity scene placed on a shelf in the narthex. (Apparently they have difficulty differentiating Advent,) As I moved back to admire the figures I noticed that looming above the shelf and figures was a fine crucifix. There it was - the same enigma, the same paradox.

Many people come to their churches or to a church to celebrate Christmas. It is always a warm time with decorations, candles, smells, bells, and the echoes of our childhood. I hope that you and I, will be able to get beyond our delight with such a wonderful season, and for a moment see the cross, our redemption, our salvation in these events layered with tradition. I can recall a very singular moment for me. I was visiting the Philadelphia Art Museum. In wandering the collections at random, I turned sharply into a dimly light gallery. There, pinpointed by light and standing sharply in contrast to the faded violet cloth behind it, was the Buddha. I quickly thought to myself, "I wish Christmass could be like this!" Whether there were other displays in the room I cannot remember - I do, however, remember that Buddha.

I hope that this Christmass the Christ who redeems and saves you will be clearly evident in all that we do and say here. And I hope that you will find the hope that wells up from that vision of the child destined for the cross will convince you to come here or some other church. As the carols fade, may we hear only the song of the angels in our hearts - the full knowledge that this humble child has saved us.

A blessed Christmass to you.

Antiphonal Mass for Christmas, J. Wingate Gatehouse

We are glad that you have joined us at St. Francis Church today. If you are unfamiliar with the Lutheran service, you might find these suggestions helpful. The service is printed in this folder. If you have any trouble following the service, please ask the person next to you for help. The language of the prayers, hymns and scriptures has been modified in order to recognize that the Bible contains images of God that are either masculine, or feminine, or neither. We realize that such changes in language are troubling for some. Exclusively male references, on the other hand, are troubling to others. The entire Christian Church is in transition on this issue, including this congregation. We are interested in any comments that you might have.

A SERVICE OF CAROLS

The congregation is invited and encouraged to heartily join in singing all the hymns and carols. The anthems will be sung by the choir.

PRELUDE: Fantasia on IN DULCI JUBILO, BWV 729 Johann Sebastian Bach

CAROL: Good Christian Friends, Rejoice In dulci jubilo

1. Good Christian friends, rejoice
With heart and soul and voice;
Give ye heed to what we say:
Jesus Christ is born today;
Ox and ass before Christ bow,
The Babe is in the manger now.
Christ is born today!
Christ is born today! 2. Good Christian friends, rejoice
With heart and soul and voice;
Now ye hear of endless bliss:
Jesus Christ was born for this!
And has opened heaven’s door
And we are blest forevermore.
Christ was born for this!
Christ was born for this!

3. Good Christian friends, rejoice
With heart and soul and voice;
Now we need not fear the grave;
Jesus Christ was born to save!
Calls you one and calls you all
To gain God’s everlasting hall.
Christ was born to save!
Christ was born to save!

ANTHEM: Fling Wide The Door John Yarrington

Fling wide the door, unbar the gate;
The King of glory comes in state;
The Lord of lords and King of kings,
The Savior of the world who brings
His great salvation to the earth.
So raise a shout of holy mirth
And praise our God and Lord,
Creator, Spirit, Word. He is the rock of our belief,
The heart of mercy's gentle self.
His kingly crown is holiness;
His scepter is his loveliness;
He brings our sorrows to an end.
Now gladly praise our king and friend,
And worship him with song
For saving us from wrong.

Oh, happy towns and blessed lands
That live by their true king's commands
And blessed be the hearts he rules,
The humble places where he dwells.
He is the rightful Son of bliss
Who fills our lives and makes us his,
Creator of the world,
Our only strength for good.
Fling wide the door, unbar the gate;
The King of glory comes in state;
The Lord of lords and King of kings,
The Savior of the world who brings
His great salvation to the earth.
So raise a shout of holy mirth
And praise our God and Lord,
Creator, Spirit, Word.

The King of Glory comes!

CAROL: "Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming" Es Ist Ein’ Ros’ Entsprungen

1. Lo, how a rose is growing
A bloom of finest grace;
The prophets had foretold it:
A branch of Jesse's race
Would bear one perfect flow'r
Here in the cold of winter
And darkest mid-nigh hour 2. The rose of which I'm singing
Isaiah had foretold.
He came to us through Mary
Who sheltered him from cold.
Through God's eternal will
This child to us was given
At midnight calm and still

3. This flow'r, so small and tender
With fragrance fills the air;
And brightness ends the darkness
That kept the earth in fear.
True God and yet true man,
Christ came to save all people
From earth's dark night of sin.

ANTHEM: There Is No Rose Of Such Vertu Mark Sedio

There is no rose of such vertu
As is the rose that bare Jesu.
Alleluia.
For by that rose we may well see
There be one God in persons three,
Parens forma. (of equal form)
For in that rose conteined was
Heaven and earth in litel space,
Res miranda. (a marvelous thing)
The angels sungen the shepherds to:
Gaudeamus! (Let us rejoice)
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
(Glory to God on high!)
Leave we all this werldly mirth,
And follow we this joyful birth.
Transeamus. (Let us go across [to heavenly things])

ANTHEM: The Christmas Rose J. Bert Carlson

The tiny rose, the pure white flow’r,
Comes in the cold
When all are asleep for the winter night.
God made the Christmas rose,
It’s blossom showing forth
God’s pow’r and light.

What is this rose, so white, so fair?
Is it the promise of Messiah?
Coming into a cold, dark world
To warm it with God’s love?
The earth asleep in winter’s night:
God’s children asleep,
Cold, cruel, hateful to one another. Jesus came like the rose in winter,
Awakening the children with his warm love.
Like the rosebud’s op’ning petal,
God’s children now open their arms
To feel, care, to love once more.

The tiny rose, the pure white flow’r,
Comes in the cold
When all are asleep for the winter night.
God made the Christmas rose,
It’s blossom showing forth
God’s pow’r and light.

CAROL: The First Nowell The First Nowell

1. The first Nowell the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds
in fields as they lay;
in fields where they
lay keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Refrain:
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell!
Born is the King of Israel
2. They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east
beyond them far;
And to the earth
it gave great light
and so it continued both day and night.
Refrain

3. And by the light of that same star
Three Magi did come
from country far;
to seek for a king
was their intent
and to follow the star wherever it went.
Refrain 4. This star drew near to the north-west
O’er Bethlehem
it took its rest;
and there it did
both stop and stay
Right over the place where Jesus lay.
Refrain.

ANTHEM: Gentle Mary Laid Her Child arr. Timothy Dommer

Gentle Mary laid her Child
Lowly in a manger;
There he lay, the Undefiled,
To the world a stranger.
Such a Babe in such a place,
Can He be the Savior?
Ask the sav'd of all the race
Who have found his favor.
Angels sang about His birth
Wise men sought and found Him;
Heaven's star shone brightly forth
Glory all around Him.
Shepherds saw the wondrous sight,
Heard the angels singing;
All the plains were lit that night,
All the hills were ringing.
Gentle Mary laid her Child
Lowly in a manger;
He is still the Undefiled,
But no more a stranger.
Son of God of humble birth
Beautiful the story;
Praise His name in all the earth;
Hail! the King of Glory!

CHRISTMASS

THE ENTRANCE RITE
As the bells are rung, the people rise, and the ministers enter from the Sacristy.
THE BIDDING PRAYER

P. Beloved in Christ, be it this Christmas Eve our care and delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of prophets and angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, and the babe lying in a manger.

Therefore, let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious redemption brought us by this Holy Child: and let us make this church glad with our carols of praise and hope.

But first let us pray for the needs of God's whole world: for peace and goodwill over all the earth; for unity and kinship within the Church Christ came to build, and especially within the neighborhoods, cities and states of this fair land.

And let us at this time remember in Christ's name the poor and the helpless, the cold, the hungry and the oppressed; the sick in body and in mind and them that mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children and all who do not know of the love of Christ.

Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in Jesus our Savior, we for evermore are one.

C. Amen.

PROCESSION TO THE CRÈCHE: Dominus dixit ad me Gregorian Chant, Mode II
The People turn to face the procession as it proceeds to the crèche.

Dominus dixit ad me:
Filius meus es tu, ego hodie genui. The Lord said unto me:
You are my Son, today I have begotten you.

READING: Saint Luke 2:1-7 The Birth of Jesus

BLESSING OF THE CRÈCHE
P. O Christ, you once came among us to give us a vision of God’s love and presence with us. May this crèche be a sign and reminder to us that you are with us still. Bless + these images that they might be a remembrance of your love for us, and bless our hearts that they might be a fit dwelling place for your spirit and grace.
C. Amen.

*PROCESSION FROM THE CRÈCHE: Puer natus est nobis Gregorian Chant, Mode VII

Puer natus est nobis, et filius datus est nobis:

Magni consilii Angelus
Unto us a child is born and a son is given:
Dominion is on his shoulder
And his name shall be called
The Angel of Great Counsel.

HYMN OF PRAISE:
P. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward all.

PRAYER OF THE DAY:
P. May God be with you.
C. And also with you.
P. Let us pray:
There is silence for a time, then:
P. Almighty God, you made this holy night shine with the brightness of the true Light. Grant that here on earth we may walk in the light of Jesus' presence and in the last day wake to the brightness of Christ's glory; through your only Child, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C. Amen.

NICENE CREED
C. We believe in one God, the Holy, the Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of God, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Creator, through Whom all things were made. For us and for our salvation the Word came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit the Word became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made flesh. For our sake Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate; suffered death and was buried. On the third day Jesus rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God. Christ will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and this reign will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the giver of life, who proceeds from God. With the Most High and the Christ, the Spirit is worshiped and glorified, the Spirit has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

PROPER PREFACE:

SANCTUS:

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
P. You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Word, our hope. Born in humility, Jesus came to rule over all. Helpless as an infant, Christ showed the power of your love. Poor in things of the world, Jesus brought the wealth of your grace. Rejected by many, Jesus welcomed all who sought the Messiah. In his dying and rising you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.

On the night of betrayal, Jesus took bread and gave + thanks; broke it, and gave it to the disciples saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, Jesus took the cup, gave + thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith.

Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon + these your gifts of bread and wine, that the bread we break and the cup we bless may be the communion of the body and blood of Jesus our Savior. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, that we may be one with all who share in this feast.

Empower us by your Spirit, O God, to be Christ's presence in the world even as Jesus was God-with-us. Give us courage to speak Christ's truth, to seek Christ's justice, and to love with Christ's love. Keep us faithful in your service until Christ comes in final victory and we shall feast with all your saints in the joy of your eternal realm.

Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, O Most High, now and forever.

PRAYER OF JESUS
C. Our Father and Mother in heaven, hallowed be your name, your reign begin, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For dominion and power and glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD
P. When we eat this bread we share the body of Christ.
When we drink this cup we share the blood of Christ.
C. Reveal yourself to us, O Christ, in the breaking of bread, as once you revealed yourself to your disciples.
The bread is broken
P. Holy things for holy people.
C. Amen.

AGNUS DEI:

THE COMMUNION:
Following the Agnus Dei, the People are seated. Those who wish to commune come forward at the direction of the usher. Those who wish to receive the laying on of hands and anointing for healing may go to the font at any time during the communion.

In the Eucharist, Lutherans believe that we receive Christ’s body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins in with and under the bread and the wine. All who seek the presence of Christ in their lives are welcome at our altar. Communion is received continuously at the head of the center aisle. The bread will be placed in your hand. The wine may be received from the common cup, or by dipping your bread into the cup, or by taking one of the individual glasses filled with white wine, or with red grape juice. After you have received, you may return to your seat.

COMMUNIO: Before the Marvel of this Night Carl Schalk

Before the marvel of this night
Adoring, fold your wings and bow,
Then tear the sky apart with light
And with your news the world endow.
Proclaim the birth of Christ and peace,
That fear and death and sorrow cease:
Sing peace, sing gift of peace!
Awake the sleeping world with song,
This is the day the Lord has made.
Assemble here, celestial throng.
In royal splendor come arrayed.
Give earth a glimpse of heav’nly bliss,
A teasing taste of what they miss:
Sing bliss, sing endless bliss!
The love that we have always known,
Our constant joy and endless light,
Now to the loveless world be shown,
Now break upon its deathly night.
Into one song compress the love
That rules our universe above:
Sing love, sing God is love!

Weihnachten, Op. 145, Nr. 3 Max Reger

The Snow Lay on the Ground arr. Leo Sowerby

The snow lay on the ground, the stars shone bright.
When Christ our Lord was born
On Christmas Night.
Venite adoremus Dominum.*
St. Joseph, too, was by to tend the child;
To guard Him and protect his mother mild:
The angels hovered round, and sung this song,
Venite adoremus Dominum.
‘Twas Mary, virgin pure of holy Anne,
That brought into the world the God made man,
She laid Him in a stall at Bethlehem;
The ass and oxen shared the roof with them.
Venite adoremus Dominum. And thus that manger poor became a throne;
For He, whom Mary bore was God the Son.
O come then let us join the heav’nly host
To praise the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Venite adoremus Dominum.

*Come and worship our God.

Candles are lit following the communion. The acolyte will light a candle at the front of each side of the church. Please light the candles of those sitting around you. The candles remain lit through the remainder of the service.

All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child,
Holy Infant, so tender and mild,

Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav'nly hosts sing, Alleluia!
Christ, the Savior is born!
3. Silent night, holy night!
Word of God, love's pure light.
Radiant beams from your holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus Christ at your birth.
