OLD TESTAMENT: Wisdom 3: 1 - 9 (RCL)
Wis. 3:1 (NRSV) But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,
and no torment will ever touch them.
2 In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died,
and their departure was thought to be a disaster,
3 and their going from us to be their destruction;
but they are at peace.
4 For though in the sight of others they were punished,
their hope is full of immortality.
5 Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good,
because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;
6 like gold in the furnace he tried them,
and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them.
7 In the time of their visitation they will shine forth,
and will run like sparks through the stubble.
8 They will govern nations and rule over peoples,
and the Lord will reign over them forever.
9 Those who trust in him will understand truth,
and the faithful will abide with him in love,
because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones,
and he watches over his elect.
Isaiah 25: 6 - 9 (alt. for RCL)
Isai 25:6 (NRSV) On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all
peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,
of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.
7 And he will destroy on this mountain
the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
the sheet that is spread over all nations;
he will swallow up death forever.
8 Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces,
and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,
for the LORD has spoken.
9 It will be said on that day,
Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.
This is the LORD for whom we have waited;
let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) 44: 1 - 10, 13 - 14 (ECUSA)
Ecclus. 44:1 (NRSV) Let us now sing the praises of famous men,
our ancestors in their generations.
2 The Lord apportioned to them great glory,
his majesty from the beginning.
3 There were those who ruled in their kingdoms,
and made a name for themselves by their valor;
those who gave counsel because they were intelligent;
those who spoke in prophetic oracles;
4 those who led the people by their counsels
and by their knowledge of the people's lore;
they were wise in their words of instruction;
5 those who composed musical tunes,
or put verses in writing;
6 rich men endowed with resources,
living peacefully in their homes-
7 all these were honored in their generations,
and were the pride of their times.
8 Some of them have left behind a name,
so that others declare their praise.
9 But of others there is no memory;
they have perished as though they had never existed;
they have become as though they had never been born,
they and their children after them.
10 But these also were godly men,
whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten;
13 Their offspring will continue forever,
and their glory will never be blotted out.
14 Their bodies are buried in peace,
but their name lives on generation after generation.
Ecclesiasticus 2: (1 - 6) 7 - 11 (alt. for ECUSA)
Ecclus. 2:1 (NRSV) My child, when you come to serve the Lord,
prepare yourself for testing.
2 Set your heart right and be steadfast,
and do not be impetuous in time of calamity.
3 Cling to him and do not depart,
so that your last days may be prosperous.
4 Accept whatever befalls you,
and in times of humiliation be patient.
5 For gold is tested in the fire,
and those found acceptable, in the furnace of humiliation.
6 Trust in him, and he will help you;
make your ways straight, and hope in him.
7 You who fear the Lord, wait for his mercy;
do not stray, or else you may fall.
8 You who fear the Lord, trust in him,
and your reward will not be lost.
9 You who fear the Lord, hope for good things,
for lasting joy and mercy.
10 Consider the generations of old and see:
has anyone trusted in the Lord and been disappointed?
Or has anyone persevered in the fear of the Lord and been forsaken?
Or has anyone called upon him and been neglected?
11 For the Lord is compassionate and merciful;
he forgives sins and saves in time of distress.
PSALM 24 (RCL,
Psalm 24: 1 - 6 (Roman Catholic)
Psal 24:1 (NRSV) The earth is the LORD's and all that is in it,
the world, and those who live in it;
2 for he has founded it on the seas,
and established it on the rivers.
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 Those who have clean hands and pure hearts,
who do not lift up their souls to what is false,
and do not swear deceitfully.
5 They will receive blessing from the LORD,
and vindication from the God of their salvation.
6 Such is the company of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
7 Lift up your heads, O gates!
and be lifted up, O ancient doors!
that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is the King of glory?
The LORD, strong and mighty,
the LORD, mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O gates!
and be lifted up, O ancient doors!
that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is this King of glory?
The LORD of hosts,
he is the King of glory. [Se'lah]
149 Cantate Domino (ECUSA BCP)
1 Hallelujah!
Sing to the LORD a new song; *
sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful.
2 Let Israel rejoice in his Maker; *
let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his Name in the dance; *
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.
4 For the LORD takes pleasure in his people *
and adorns the poor with victory.
5 Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; *
let them be joyful on their beds.
6 Let the praises of God be in their throat *
and a two-edged sword in their hand;
7 To wreak vengeance on the nations *
and punishment on the peoples;
8 To bind their kings in chains *
and their nobles with links of iron;
9 To inflict on them the judgment decreed; *
this is glory for all his faithful people.
Hallelujah!
NEW TESTAMENT: Revelation 21: 1 - 6a (RCL)
Reve 21:1 (NRSV) Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first
heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I
saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from
the throne saying,
"See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them as their God;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away."
5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all
things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and
true." 6 Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the
beginning and the end.
Revelation 7: 2 - 4, 9 - 17 (ECUSA, 1st Reading for Roman Catholic)
Reve 7:2 (NRSV) I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun,
having the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the
four angels who had been given power to damage earth and sea, 3 saying, "Do
not damage the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have marked the
servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads."
4 And I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred forty-four
thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the people of Israel:
9 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could
count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages,
standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm
branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying,
"Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!"
11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the
four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and
worshiped God, 12 singing,
"Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
and thanksgiving and honor
and power and might
be to our God forever and ever! Amen."
13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in
white, and where have they come from?" 14 I said to him, "Sir, you are the
one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of
the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the
blood of the Lamb.
15 For this reason they are before the throne of God,
and worship him day and night within his temple,
and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.
16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;
the sun will not strike them,
nor any scorching heat;
17 for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of the water of life,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
Ephesians 1: (11 - 14) 15 - 23 (alt. for ECUSA)
Ephe 1:11 (NRSV) In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been
destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things
according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were the first to set
our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you
also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation,
and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy
Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's
own people, to the praise of his glory.
15 I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the
saints, and for this reason 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you as I
remember you in my prayers. 17 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you
come to know him, 18 so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you
may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of
his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable
greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his
great power. 20 God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from
the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far
above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name
that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22 And he
has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things
for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in
all.
1 John 3: 1 - 3 (Roman Catholic)
1Joh 3:1 (NRSV) See what love the Father has given us, that we should be
called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does
not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children
now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this:
when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3
And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
GOSPEL: John 11: 32 - 44 (RCL)
John 11:32 (NRSV) When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at
his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not
have died." 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her
also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34 He
said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." 35
Jesus began to weep. 36 So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" 37 But
some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have
kept this man from dying?"
38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and
a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha,
the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench
because he has been dead four days." 40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell
you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" 41 So they took
away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for
having heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for
the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent
me." 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Laz'arus, come
out!" 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of
cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and
let him go."
Matthew 5: 1 - 12 (ECUSA, Roman Catholic)
Matt 5:1 (NRSV) When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and
after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and
taught them, saying:
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will
be filled.
7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs
is the kingdom of heaven.
11 "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all
kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for
your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the
prophets who were before you.
Luke 6: 20 - 26 (27 - 36) (alt. for ECUSA)
Luke 6:20 (NRSV) Then he looked up at his disciples and said:
"Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 "Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
"Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
22 "Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile
you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and
leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what
their ancestors did to the prophets.
24 "But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your consolation.
25 "Woe to you who are full now,
for you will be hungry.
"Woe to you who are laughing now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26 "Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors
did to the false prophets.
27 "But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who
hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 If
anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who
takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to everyone
who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them
again. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even
sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to
you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you
lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you?
Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your
enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be
great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the
ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
