A Service of Tenebrae, or "Darkness," is based on a twelfth–century late night/early morning service
and is an extended meditation on the passion of Christ. It may be used as (1) a concluding service following
Holy Communion on Holy Thursday, or (2) the evening service on Good Friday, particularly as the
beginning of a prayer vigil lasting through Saturday.
