Below is a sunrise service our local churches did last year at the beach. I have simply attached it as is. I hope it makes sense. And the sharing of the bread was sort of a way of stepping toward a breaking of the bread-experience. We used resources from Stages on the way. (Wild Goose Worship group)as part of the inspiration. This year re changing the story of the going fishing to Mary M meeting the teacher. I have attached that new addition also. Ken Day. Baptist: Many extraordinary things happened, a great earthquake, an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, appearance like lightning, and his clothing white as snow, guards shaking and becoming like dead men. But the angel had said to the women, "Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Catholic: The women remembered how Jesus told them that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again. Returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Living Waters: And we say 'glory be to you God! Our strength and redeemer! The vacant cross and the empty tomb vindicate your claim that the love of Jesus which suffers is the love of Jesus which saves.' Duet (Uniting) - song Presbyterian: Today we greet you gathered here by the sea on the first day of the week as the sun is rising. Perhaps not too far from what happened at one of the appearances of our Lord Jesus: The risen Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Anglican: Gathered there together were Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee, and other disciples. Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, and there they tried to renew their skill from days gone by of fishing - but that night they caught nothing. Their nets remained empty. Catholic: Just after daybreak, a man stood on the beach. It was Jesus; but the disciples did not know that it was him. The man called to them, "Good morning. Have you caught any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some." Living Waters: So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. On of the other disciples said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was stripped down for fishing, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land now. Baptist: And now this story comes to its heart. It is a story of fulfillment, and a sign for you and me, and for all the community. And it is a reality for us this moment. Listen on: Presbyterian: When they had gone ashore, they saw a fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Catholic: Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. I wasn't sure if Barry said some one from his congregation might sing. If so, this will be a great spot for their song. Song - Living Waters. Uniting: Not only do we believe, but we want to assure you that Jesus on the beach in Galilee is the same Jesus who comes to you this Easter morning. Did you hear how Jesus came to the disciples in their time when it seemed all was missing - they had lost their friend, and their skill to fish - cast you net on the other side - so too Jesus comes to you in your time of loss, grief, and feeling that nothing is working out. Anglican: Did you hear how Jesus met the disciples with everything they needed for sustenance and joy - a fire for warmth, fish to eat, bread to share - so too Jesus comes to you in your time of coldness, hunger, and feeling that you are on your own. Baptist: Did you hear how Jesus invited the disciples to bring what they had as gifts for the breakfast - the fish they had caught - so too Jesus invites you to bring your gifts to him, the 'you' he has made, because he loves you. Living Waters: As a sign of this love of God, and God's willing ness to give - even his only Son - we would like to share amongst us this morning, bread and fish, tea and coffee, so we can be encouraged by Jesus, give our gifts to Jesus, meet together as the disciples did on that beach with Jesus. Bernard (Catholic) - solo - "Come as you are, that's how I want you." During this song, the basket of breads is broken into pieces and put into the baskets for sharing around later. Presbyterian: So please hear our invitation for you to stay a little longer, and especially hear the Lord's invitation - come, as you are, feel not afraid - the Lord is risen - he is risen indeed. Uniting: As we will be fed together with Jesus, may we go and feed others who need the bread of life. As we are being set free by the risen Jesus, may we go and set free those who fear the grave. As we have received - give. As we have heard - proclaim. And the blessing that we have received from Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be always with you. Amen. We have this time to share the food, and meet new people. A good time for the distribution of pamphlets to people who didn't receive one prior to the service. This year's alteration: Presbyterian: Today we greet you gathered here by the sea on the first day of the week as the sun is rising. Perhaps not too far from what happened at one of the appearances of our Lord Jesus: Anglican: Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13 They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Catholic: 15 Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him "Teacher". 17 Jesus said to her, "Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; Song Uniting: Not only do we believe, but we want to assure you that Jesus in the garden is the same Jesus who comes to you this Easter morning. Did you hear how Jesus came to Mary Magdalene in her time when tears prevented her from seeing the truth - she had lost her friend, her teacher , so too Jesus comes to you in your time of loss, grief, and feeling that all is lost. Anglican: Did you hear how Mary's faith caused her to come to the garden of the tomb - the empty tomb now - to seek for Jesus. Today you have come seeking the Lord - he is risen! Baptist: Did you hear how Jesus called to may by name. 'Mary'. And Mary recognized the voice of her Lord. Today Jesus calls you by name.
